Beer Review: Evil Twin Brewing – Molotov Cocktail

I’ve always been very intrigued by Evil Twin’s unique combination brews along with their one of a kind names. This beer is no exception to that opinion. My only regret with this beer is not getting my hands on it a little closer to the bottle date. Either way this one was a big boy, coming in at 13%, this was indeed a treat. Just wanted a little bit more hops which I knew would be there with a fresher date. This was also the first time using my new Sauvin glass. Check out a previous review of ETB’s Femme Fatale Sudachi here. Now on to the review for this one.

Molotov Cocktail (Bottle Date: Julian Code: 310:14 12:50 – November 6th, 2014)

Evil Twin Brewing - Molotov Cocktail

Served in my Sauvin glass.

Appearance: half finger of white head that quickly disappears, clear crisp look, golden orange in color, tangerine, decent amount of bubbles coming to the top

Aroma: oranges, tangerines, citrus fruit, piney resin, grapefruit, very hop forward, some sweetness, slight notes of honey, overall the smell of a nice DIPA

Mouthfeel: medium to full body, coats the mouth with a layer of sweetness, deep malty backbone that brings some slight caramel notes to the body of the beer

Taste: super rich in sweetness, hop present is definitely more on the nose, but does decide to shine through during the middle of the taste, nope overly piney, more well balanced for the 13% alcohol that it suggests

Finish: tons of sweet and earthy notes on the finish, a slight hop presence is there but definitely overshadowed by the amount of sweetness that this beer has. You are left with the 13% booze on the tongue that lingers around well after the taste.

Personal Recommendations of Food/Cheese Pairings: grilled chicken, chicken parmesan, grilled asparagus, amish blue, creamy goat cheese, or just pair this one by itself after dinner

Overall: 8.6/10

The hop presence on the nose had me extremely excited, but the taste did not deliver. I can see how this one clocks in at 13% by how sweet the taste.  Overall this wasn’t a bad beer, it was just a deceiving one. That’s just how it goes sometimes. The nose one the beer for me, the taste did not meet the expectations. But with that said this beer was still very well balanced and only showed a few signs of booziness as the beer warmed up.

Cheers!
